Scientist-Educator Collaborative Workshop at the University of Connecticut

Attendance: Formal and informal educators who serve a variety of audiences, including K-12 students, university students, families, adults and the general public
An important yet often untapped resource for educators is the research scientist whose ability to connect concepts, information, and data is "second nature." This unique one and a half day workshop will team formal and informal educators with internationally known climate and ocean research scientists.
Workshop participants will work with research scientists who have been trained to use concept mapping techniques to convey complex scientific ideas. Using cutting-edge multi-media tools, participants will learn how create concept maps for future use in their own classrooms, informal venues or other programming.
Funded by the National Science Foundation, up to 10 educators will have the opportunity to improve their collective understanding of related content and how they translated this information to various audiences.
Description
- Designed for both formal and informal educators who serve a variety of audiences, including K-12 students, university students, families, adults and the general public
- The workshop will consist of teams (1 scientist: 2 educators) who will create learning resources that align with Climate and Ocean Literacy Principles
- Teams will create online concept maps that evolve over the course of the workshop and each participant will walk away with their own personalized version of a concept map that can be customized for the needs of their specific audiences
Anticipated Results
- Introduction to new multimedia interactive tools to help you reach target audiences
- Valid translation of research science for a variety of audiences - starting within the flexible structure of concept mapping techniques developed by COSEE-OS
- Sharing your understanding of good education practices and real-world scenarios with practicing scientists to help improve their communication skills

Additional Details
- Overnight housing for Thursday (if needed) & Friday
- All meals will be paid by COSEE-OS
- Each educator will receive a $100 stipend
