Sea Jellies in Aquariums: The Next Frontier
Date: 01/13/10 7:00 pm - 01/13/10
Location: Aquarium of the Pacific (Honda Theater), 100 Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA

Spend the evening with Aquarium of the Pacific Senior Aquarist Nate Jaros as he takes us behind the scenes, sharing a day-in-the-life of the Aquarium’s sea jelly specialist. He will answer the questions: Are jellyfish” making a move into pop culture? And will they be the next frontier for advanced marine hobbyists? Today we are learning more and more about these gelatinous creatures through the husbandry of these animals in protected environments such as aquariums. With better understanding of their natural ranges and diets, captive-reared specimens are growing larger, living longer, and better representing their wild counterparts.

After successfully culturing the seahorse, Hippocampus erectus, at the Aquarium, Jaros turned his attention to the Aquarium’s sea jelly culture lab where he has not only filled the Aquarium’s exhibits with cultured jellies, but also sent jellies to other aquariums nationwide.
