COSEE Alaska Communicating Ocean Science Workshop
Date: 01/18/10 8:00 am - 01/18/10 12:00 pm
Location: Alaska Marine Science Symposum

The Communicating Ocean Sciences (COS) and the Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences (COSIA) courses were developed by a team of scientists and marine education specialists at UC Berkeley and The Lawrence Hall of Science. The courses provide students with an introduction to inquiry-based pedagogy that is grounded in research and theory on learning and teaching science in formal and informal environments, as well as builds on their interests in, and knowledge of, ocean sciences. COS and COSIA are designed for undergraduate and graduate students in the sciences and are appropriate for students with a broad range of science backgrounds. Content supplements are provided to accommodate the diverse backgrounds of the students. Both COS and COSIA include a practicum in which pairs of students observe, develop, and teach 6 sessions at a local K-6 classroom or informal science education institution (e.g., museum, science center, aquarium), respectively (1-2 hours/week over 6 weeks). The course has won awards for its innovative design, and is widely recognized as a model for promoting ocean science literacy.
