The Science of Marine Protected Areas
Date: 10/21/08 7:00 pm - 10/21/08 8:30 pm
Location: MLK, Jr. Auditorium, Santa Monica Public Library

Passed into California state law in 1999, the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) requires a statewide system of marine protected areas be created to protect, among other things, marine life, habitat, and ecosystems. The initial planning stages of the MLPA process are ongoing in Southern California from Point Conception in Santa Barbara County to the California border with Mexico, including offshore islands. Ocean science plays an important role in planning marine protected areas. Dr. Airamé will present a free public lecture about marine protected areas and the most current scientific understanding about their effects on ocean ecosystems.

This event is sponsored by Heal the Bay, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and COSEE-West. Dr. Satie Airamé is the South Coast Science and Planning Advisor for the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative.
