Date: 01/25/09 - 01/30/09
Location: Nice, France

The American Society of Limnology and Oceanography Aquatic Sciences (ASLO) meeting will be held in Nice, France, January 25 - 30, 2009. COSEE will be represented in ASLO Session 051: Free Choice Learning: Where Science, Education, and Careers Meet. COSEE has 11 abstracts submitted to this session. Session chairs are George Matsumoto (MBARI), Leslie Peart (COL), and Liesl Hotaling (Beacon Institute).

Free choice learning is education that is self-motivated, guided by the learner's desires and needs, and is the most common form of life-long learning. It happens while surfing the internet, in aquaria, in science museums, listening to radio or television, and in many other venues. It is also exceptionally effective at inspiring new scientists and in promoting the importance of science and its central role in society.

This session will solicit contributions on free choice learning activities, such as Distinguished Lecturer Series, podcasts, and exhibits. Presentations that focus on the definition and context of free-choice learning experiences, methods for gauging activity effectiveness and impact, and on those programs that provide create interactions between scientists, educators, and the general public is of special interest.
