High School Girls Learn Research Methods at the Darling Marine Center
Date: 04/08/11 - 04/09/11
Location: Darling Marine Center, Walpole, Maine

COSEE-OS and science teacher Sharon Gallant (Gardiner Area High School, Gardiner, Maine) will bring 10 senior high school girls to the Darling Marine Center (DMC) to learn about science research methods.  The students will participate in activities led by UMaine science faculty and graduate students exposing them to research technologies and sampling and collection methods. This field trip is being funded through a mini grant awarded by the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP). The goal of NGCP is to support programs that encourage girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Sharon Gallant’s goal is to provide an opportunity for girls to learn about careers in the ocean sciences while gaining exposure to important technological research tools and techniques. The field trip will engage girls in mudflat sampling of marine polychaete worms as well as plankton towing from a DMC research vessel.  Following the activities, the girls will carry out more observations and discussions in the lab. The students will incorporate topics learned in the training into digital concept maps, which they will present and use as teaching tools on visits to elementary classrooms in their local school district. They will create the maps using COSEE-OS online concept mapping software.
