Many Learning Pathways in the Ocean Sciences Fall 2011 Webinar Series

COSEE-OS, the Institute for Broadening Participation and COSEE-Ocean Learning Communities are pleased to announce the 2nd half of a pilot webinar series titled Many Learning Pathways in the Ocean Sciences. The series will highlight scientists and mentors making significant contributions in their fields and will be a forum for sharing successful strategies for increasing diversity in the ocean sciences community. The presenters will talk about their science topics as well as their experiences being an under-represented minority in a science field, and/or their experience providing mentorship to under-represented minorities.

Featuring: Lonnie Gonsalves (NOAA Cooperative Oxford Laboratory in Oxford, Maryland)

Lonnie Gonsalves is a doctoral student at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and a member of the Class of 2010 NOAA Graduate Sciences Program . He received his B.S. in Biology from East Carolina University in 2005. Lonnie currently performs research on striped bass health and immunity at the Cooperative Oxford Laboratory (COL) under the guidance of Dr. John Jacobs. At COL, Lonnie is currently conducting his dissertation project entitled “Nutritional Status and Immune Function of Chesapeake Bay Striped Bass Morone saxatilis”. In addition to his thesis research, Lonnie assists COL’s Coastal Ecosystem Assessment and Pathogen Monitoring Program. He also possesses a keen interest in science education and youth mentoring. As a member and past-president of the American Fisheries Society UMES Student Subunit, Lonnie has participated extensively in student outreach initiatives that facilitate environmental awareness, science education, and participation in aquatic sciences. He continues to pursue these endeavors as president-elect of the AFS Equal Opportunities Section. As a native of eastern North Carolina and current resident of the Delmar peninsula, Lonnie enjoys ample opportunities for fishing, biking, and canoeing from spring-fall on the gorgeous “Maryland Eastern Shore”.
