Ocean Observing Systems: Summer Teacher Institute 2012
Date: 07/30/12 - 08/03/12
Location: University of Southern California, the Ocean Institute, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the University of California, Los Angeles
Attendance: 25 middle and high school teachers who wish to incorporate near real-time data into their classroom instruction

In this Institute, participants will learn about cutting edge instruments deployed to collect data from the ocean environment and about the data that these instruments generate:

  • Scientists will present talks about their research using ocean observing systems (OOS).
  • Related demonstrations and hands-on activities will present different ways to use data produced by OOS sensors and samplers to enhance classroom lessons and build students' understanding of ocean systems and the importance of the ocean in their lives.

Working in teams, participants will use near-time data from OOS instruments such as moorings and buoys, as well as incorporating Principles of Ocean Literacy, to develop lesson plans that they can integrate into classroom instruction and share with other teachers.

Stipend participants will be paid a stipend of $500 for full attendance and development of an original OOS-related lesson plan to be posted on the COSEE-West website for use by other educators. Stipends will be paid upon the delivery of the lesson plan.
