Ocean scientists, are you planning on submitting a proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF) this summer or fall? Last October the NSF released a NEW Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) that contained significant revisions to the Merit Review process. Of particular note were modifications to the Broader Impact (BI) criterion – including (1) changes in the way BIs are addressed and described in proposal summaries and descriptions and (2) new standards for evaluating the quality of BI plans. It was the first major revision of the Merit Review Criteria in 15 years! Frequently asked questions about the new criterion. (PDF, 300 KB)

The changes went into effect in January 2013. Consequently, in preparation for several NSF proposal target dates in August and September, COSEE Florida will be holding a free webinar to familiarize the ocean science community with the changes to the Merit Review Criteria. During this 60-min session, you’ll gain valuable insights into the rationale behind the changes to the review criteria and learn how the new guidelines impact the proposal submission and review process. There will also be plenty of time to answer your merit review-related questions – including “how will the changes impact me?”

Who Should Attend? Scientists (PIs), educators, post-docs, and graduate students who anticipate submitting proposals to NSF later this summer or fall.
