Ocean Observing Systems Institute for Teachers

Date: 08/10/09 - 08/14/09
Location: Los Angeles locations
Attendance: Middle and high school teachers

In this Institute, participants will learn about cutting edge instruments deployed to collect data from the ocean environment and about the data that these instruments generate. Scientists will present talks about their research using ocean observing systems (OOS). There will also be related demonstrations and hands-on activities presenting different ways to use the data produced by OOS sensors and samplers in order to enhance classroom lessons and build students’ understanding of ocean systems and the importance of the ocean in their daily lives.

Working in teams, participants will use near real-time data from OOS instruments (eg. moorings and buoys) and incorporate the Principles of Ocean Literacy to develop lesson plans that they can integrate into their classroom instruction and share with other teachers.

Participation is limited to 25 middle and high school teachers who wish to incorporate near real-time data into their classroom instruction.
