Scientist-Educator Collaborative Workshop at SSC

Attendance: Informal educators who work at organizations with exhibits (e.g., aquariums, science centers), work with the public, offer programs for students, and/or conduct teacher workshops
This one and a half day workshop will connect informal educators with ocean and climate research scientists and is offered in response to the high demand from informal educators across the New England region. After receiving training on concept mapping techniques, the scientists will present maps related to their own past or future informal education projects. Educators will then learn how to customize the maps to their audiences and content levels, and make a hyperlinked map with cutting-edge multi-media tools.
This workshop will be held at the Seacoast Science Center (Center) on June 2-3, 2009. The Center, located in historic Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, NH, is a flagship institution in the region's cultural economy. A popular destination for families and students to learn about coastal environmental history, the Center creates connections to nature through personal learning experiences in the natural sciences. The Center's mission is met by providing engaging and interactive programs and exhibits.
Description
- Designed for informal educators who work at organizations with exhibits (e.g., aquariums, science centers), work with the public, offer programs for students, and/or conduct teacher workshops.
- The workshop will center on teams of educators and scientists (1 scientist : 3 educators ratio) who will create online learning resources aligned with National Science Education Standards, Climate Literacy Principles, and Ocean Literacy Principles. Topics will focus on the current research projects of the internationally known scientists who will participate in all aspects of the workshop.
- Teams will creat online concept maps that will dynamically evolve over the course of the workshop and beyond into the informal education setting. All participants will walk away from the workshop with their own personalized version of products that can be customized for their audiences’ needs.
Anticipated Results
- Valid translation of research science for a variety of audiences - starting within the flexible structure of COSEE-OS concept mapping techniques
- Sharing your understanding of good education practices and real-world scenarios with practicing scientists to help improve their communication skills
- Introduction to new multimedia interactive tools to help you reach your target audiences
Lodging & Meals
Overnight housing will be provided for those outside a 25-mile radius of the Seacoast Science Center. All meals will be paid by COSEE-OS.
