On Wednesday, December 15, the COSEE Network presented "Strategies for Effective Education and Public Outreach: Climbing the Ladder of Scientist Success" at the AGU Fall meeting in San Francisco. The flyer read:
Please join us for an active lunchtime discussion of how to enhance your networking, teaching, and professional skills. Representatives from the COSEE Networked Ocean World, COSEE Ocean Systems, COSEE California, and COSEE Ocean Communities in Education And social Networks will engage you in leadership development activities designed to help scientists maximize the impacts of their work.
After an introduction to COSEE by Gail Scowcroft, four topics for exploration were presented by COSEE Centers:
Communicating Ocean Sciences -- COSEE California
Concept Mapping as a Tool to Accurately Represent & Effectively Share Knowledge -- COSEE Ocean Systems
Building and Fostering Partnerships to Increase Participation and Diversity in STEM -- Institute for Broadening Participation (COSEE OS partner)
Assistance with Criterion II & Broader Impacts of your Research -- COSEE NOW
Using a Network Lens to Increase Your Capacity -- COSEE OCEAN
Participants then were encouraged to pursue the topic most interesting to them in a break-out group, during which the groups made drawings of networks, designed concept maps, discussed diversity challenges, and explored communicating ocean science in a curriculum setting. Chris Parsons of WordCraft then used clickers to capture some quick feedback -- revealing high marks for a lunchtime well-spent!
