An Oil Spill Professional Development Program for Formal and Informal Educators

This program occured on January 28, 2012 in three locations in Mississippi: Ole Miss-Oxford, MS Museum of Natural Science-Jackson, MS Department of Marine Resources- Biloxi, MS. During the three-hour session, educators heard from experts in four states on current topics, including a basic overview of oil, dispersants, and the impacts on birds and fisheries. A hands-on activity was conducted and lesson plans were provided. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) were offered as well as a Certificate of Participation, and a $100 stipend to the first 20 educators.

APRIL 20, 2011

This program occured on April 30, 2011 in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. During the three‐hour session, educators heard from experts on topics that relate to ongoing oil spill research in short and long term effects, marine mammals, habitats, and fisheries. A hands‐on activity was conducted and lesson plans were provided. A Certificate of Participation and a $100 stipend were available to the first 20 educators (per site) who completed the program requirements, electronic pre and posttests and a electronic Likertscale evaluation.

This project is being conducted by University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, Mississippi Public Broadcasting, and Mississippi State University. The work is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

As the nation’s leading scientific resource for oil spills, NOAA has been on the scene of the BP spill from the start, providing coordinated scientific weather and biological response services to federal, state and local organizations. NOAA spill specialists are advising the U.S. Coast Guard on cleanup options as well as advising all affected federal, state and local partners on sensitive marine resources at risk in this area of the Gulf of Mexico.


Gulf of Mexico Alliance

The Gulf of Mexico Alliance is deeply concerned about the potential environmental impacts the Deep Horizon Oil spill incident on the Gulf Coast region. Each Gulf state is implementing an emergency response plan, and due to the strong Gulf States alliance, agencies are coordinating to address the uncertain future of the region in the wake of the oil spill. Ongoing activities of the Alliance will support future mitigation actions related to water quality and the habitats impacted by this incident. The Alliance also offers its sympathies for those injured and unaccounted for after the explosion.

Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant Oil Spill Website

The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) Sea Grant oil spill website, hosted by the four GOM Sea Grant programs, provides visitors with access to a wealth of data concerning the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Website content will be continually updated, and visitors should check back often for new and revised information.
