Goals

  1. Incorporate survival skills into real life experiences.
  2. Increase studentsí use of newspapers, magazines and the Internet.
  3. Increase student awareness of events that occur outside of the classroom.
  4. Incorporate art with literature.

Procedure

  1. Give students about 1 hour to research the library or Internet for articles or books on examples of people who have
    experienced real life survival situations preferably at sea depending on the extent of the library's resources. Other
    related topics could be a plane crash in a deserted place, lost in a forest, etc.
  2. Each student will review the article or book that they have chosen.
  3. Each student will summarize the article or book in about 2-3 paragraphs with a paragraph focusing on the skills that
    the person(s) used in order to survive.
  4. Students will write their summary on a section of a large piece of paper and using magazines and newspapers the
    can visually depict the person's survival experience around the summary in a collage.

Assessment

  1. Student's summary of the event (Criteria for Success: an accurate summary of the event as well as correct spelling
    and grammar (See Rubrics)).
  2. Student's collage (Criteria for Success: student creativity and accurate depiction of the article or book).

Major Concepts

  1. Social Studies - the research of survival skills, communicating with the class about the meaning of the collage that
    the students made
  2. Language Arts - writing, communication
  3. Art - Collage

Extensions

  1. Students will present their collage to the class if they choose.
  2. The collages can be posted on a bulletin board in the classroom.
  3. Have students create their own real life survival story modeled after what they have read in their research.
