Procedure

1.   Give students copies of passages from the book The Voyage of the Frog which describe the design of the boat.
2.   Allow students to draw a picture of the boat based solely on the descriptive passages.  Students will draw both the
inside and outside of the boat.
3.   Once completed, allow students to compare their pictures with each other.
4.   Pass out the book Voyage of the Frog.
5.   Discuss with students the general storyline of the book.
6.   Each student will list three skills they feel David needs to posses to survive on The Frog.  Discuss the various skills
        people listed.
7.   Allow students time to browse the book.  Point out the picture of the boat in the beginning of the book.
8.   Compare the students' picture of the outside of the boat with the picture by the author.
9.   Describe any differences between the students' pictures and the author's picture.
10.  Since there is not a picture of the inside of the boat, allow students to compare with one another the pictures of the
        inside of the boat.
11.  Journal Activity:  See Journal Lesson

Assessment

1.  Students will turn in individual lists of three skills David needs to possess (Criteria for success: students will each list
       three skills with support)
2.  Students will hand in their picture of the boat (Criteria for success: students have drawn a picture that is based on the
       passages)
3.  Students will compare and contrast their pictures (Criteria for success: students have at least two similarities and
       differences between drawings)

Major Concepts
1.  Language Arts - reading and understanding the passages
2.  Math - dimensions of the boat, drawing of the boat (mathematically oriented)
3.  Art - drawing of the boat, color

Extensions
