One of the best ways that Dr. Joel Hoffman finds to balance his research responsibilities with his outreach efforts is to combine them within the context of his job. One way that he does this is to make sure that an extended project with educators – such as the week-long COSEE Great Lakes cruise – includes a productive research project. This arrangement also offers educators the chance to get involved in real hands-on research. Joel also appreciates being able to participate in education sessions at many of the large science conferences, giving him exposure to other scientists who are actively involved with outreach.
