Clearing the Air About the Ocean and Climate
Date: 01/29/11 8:00 am - 01/29/11 3:30 pm
Location: NASA JPL

COSEE West and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Earth Science EPO present a FREE educator workshop in the 2010-2011 series, co-sponsored by Boeing1. This workshop will take place at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA, in the von Karman Auditorium.

The workshop will feature a tour of some of the JPL facilities, hands-on, inquiry-based, integrative classroom activities correlated with CA Standards, and a lecture by Dr. Joshua Willis, Oceanographer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory: Global Warming Guaranteed: What the Oceans Tell Us About Climate Change.

Topic
Absorbing more than 80 percent of the increased atmospheric heat resulting from human activities, the World Ocean sets the pace for global warming. Our rising and warming seas provide a poignant reminder of our influence on our climate. Dr. Willis will discuss some of the major ways in which the ocean influences the global climate.

Josh Willis is an oceanographer and climate scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Josh studies global warming, sea level rise and the role of the ocean in our global climate. Josh was also a contributing author to the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace prize with Vice President Al Gore. In 2009, he was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.
