Introduction to Marine Science Seminar

Location: Marina del Rey Middle School, Los Angeles, CA
Attendance: Middle school teachers

COSEE-West presents this seminar featuring science content presentations by Dr. William M. Hamner, Professor Emeritus, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Marine science faculty and staff from UCLA and the University of Southern California will provide science content information through lectures and other presentations. COSEE-West staff and experienced teachers participating in the COSEE-West program will present hands-on, integrative activities related to the lecture topics. All presentations will be applicable to grades 6, 7, and 8 state frameworks, content standards, and periodic assessments. However, content lectures and activities can be modified to for the use in elementary and high school classes.

Broad topics to be presented are:

  • Plate Tectonics and Earth’s Structure
  • Shaping Earth’s Surface
  • Earth’s Oceans and Atmosphere
  • Marine Ecology
  • Earth and Life History

This Introduction to Marine Science Seminar is offered by COSEE-West and the new Marine Science Academy at Marina del Rey Middle School.
