Background with Respect to Ocean Sciences Education:

Brandon Jones received his Bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University (PA) in 1991 and his Masters
(1994) and PhD (2003) in Marine Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Delaware’s College
of Marine Studies (CMS). He joined the EPA’s National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) in
2003. His graduate work focused on larval transport, patch structure and recruitment of blue crab larvae.
As part of his studies, he was able to take two dives on ALVIN, the Woods Hole research submersible
that makes deep-sea dives to study hydrothermal vents. Brandon was the educational coordinator for the
website associated with ALVIN’s mission (www.ocean.udel.edu/extreme2001). He also taught high
school science at Gwynn Park High School in Brandywine, MD in the interim between his postgraduate
degrees (1994-1999). At the EPA, he serves as a project officer with the Science To Achieve Results
(STAR) Program. He is a member of the ecosystem, fellowship and global climate teams and manages
several suites of grants that include eco-statistical centers, impacts of climate on aquatic ecosystems and
invasive species. Brandon also uses his ecological expertise in the management of approximately 40
STAR fellowships, most of which focus on the dynamics of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In addition
to his EPA duties, Brandon is an adjunct professor of Environmental Science at Trinity University in Washington DC.
