Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover serves as Director of the Marine Laboratory and Chair of the Division of
Marine Science and Conservation at Duke University. She is a deep-sea biologist (PhD, MIT/Woods
Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program) with an expertise in the ecology of chemosynthetic
ecosystems, and has led numerous oceanographic expeditions. Her work with the submersible ALVIN has
taken her to nearly all of the known vent fields in the Atlantic and Pacific, as well as to deep-water
seamounts, seeps, and other significant seafloor features. Her current research focuses on exploration for and characterization of chemosynthetic ecosystems in Caribbean and Antarctic waters with sup NSF and NASA, and the impact of seafloor mining on vent ecosystems.port from
