Dr. Valerie Paul, Director of Smithsonian Marine Station (SMS) at Fort Pierce, is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of marine chemical ecology. In 2001, SMS partnered with St. Lucie County to establish the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit, a public aquarium showcasing marine ecosystems of Florida. SMS is a respected member of the informal ocean science education community in Florida. The SMS, part of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, serves as a research field station for Smithsonian scientists and their collaborators from around the world.
