Background with Respect to Ocean Sciences Education:
I have a BS in Marine Biology and an MS in Biological Oceanography. I am currently Academic Program Coordinator & Instructor at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, which involves academic program development, teaching community college and undergraduate students, and marine science education outreach. Additionally, I am Program Coordinator for the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at HMSC and Marine Science Instructor for the SMILE/STARS Summer "Bridge to College" Program for incoming OSU 1st-year students. Previously, I was Associate Director of NIH Bridges to the Baccalaureate in the Biomedical Sciences, providing academic course support, research internships and outreach for community college students. I was Academic Program Coordinator for the California Mathematics, Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) program, a K-12 science education and outreach program. As an Instructor for the Coalition for Student Academic Success (CSAS) at UC Santa Cruz, I designed and taught quarterly seminars focused on effective study skills for students in the natural sciences. Finally, I was Program Counselor/Coordinator for the Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), at UC Santa Cruz, where I designed and implemented an intensive five-week residential program to prepare "at risk" students from challenged educational backgrounds for their university experience both
academically and socially at UC Santa Cruz.
