Curriculum Goal: The students will familiarize themselves with pirates and write a comparison/contrast paper on pirates.

 

1.Are People Who You Think?

• An active introductory to pirates and stereotypes where students not only learn about, but create their own pirates.
• Incorporates Art, Language Arts and Social Studies
• Estimated Time: 4 - 5 hours

2.Comparison/Contrast Paper

• This lesson runs throughout the entire two week pirate curriculum. Students will write a comparison/contrast paper.
• Incorporates Language Arts and Science
• Estimated Time: 4 - 5 hours

3.Ship Introduction and Mural

• An introduction to a ship's parts allowing students to create their own pirate ship mural. Introduction to Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.
• Incorporates Art, Language Arts and Social Studies
• Estimated Time: 5.5 - 6.5 hours

4.Pirate Poetry

• A poetic lesson where students compare and contrast pirates from two poems using Venn diagrams. Students also create their own pirate poems.
• Incorporates Language Arts and Math
• Estimated Time: 2.5 - 3.5 hours

5.Ocean Life

• A cooperative lesson where students identify, research and present information regarding oceanic life.
• Incorporates Language Arts and Science
• Estimated Time: 4 hours

6.Fractions and Percentages of Pirates

• An interesting lesson about fractions, percentages and drawing conclusions from these about the attitudes of the characters throughout Treasure Island.
• Incorporates Language Arts and Math
• Estimated Time: 1 - 3 hours

7.Treasure or Not?

• A unique lesson using fractions as unit conversions to find monetary equivalencies from other nations.
• Incorporates Language Arts, Math and Social Studies
• Estimated Time: 2.5 - 4 hours

8.Geography: Places, Terms and Definitions

• An colorful lesson using topographic maps to learn about geographic terms associated near an ocean. Introduction to Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson.
• Incorporates Language Arts, Math and Social Studies Estimated Time: 2 - 3 hours

9.Scotland and Pirates

• A research lesson asking students to discover the world of Scottish Clans and pirates.
• Incorporates Language Arts and Social Studies
• Estimated Time: 14 - 22 hours

10.How Far Has David Balfour Traveled?

• An applicative lesson tracing David Balfour's travels in Kidnapped to find distances within the school's locality.
• Incorporates Language Arts, Math and Social Studies
• Estimated Time: 2 - 2.5 hours

11.How's the Weather?

• An interactive lesson where students learn about ocean storms and actually adopt an ocean storm, tracing its path over several days.
• Incorporates Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies
• Estimated Time: 10 - 14 hours
