Sea Scholars Lesson Plans

Curriculum Development - A team of middle school preservice teachers is developing curriculum materials in conjunction with the local middle school teachers.  New topics will be identified by students and teachers, and curriculum materials developed and shared on these new areas.

A Mythological Look into the Oceans- From Greek and Roman gods to the Bermuda Triangle, this unit seeks to help students explore and appreciate the mythological wonders within the oceans of the world. (Based on the book The Voyage of Odysseus by James Reeves).

Ahoy Matey- An interdisciplinarycurriculum on pirates. Based on the
books Treasure Islandand Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson.
 
 
A.L.O.H.A.- Learn more about Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean waters. Also, you will better understand the vital role oceans play around the world.  Caribbean Cruisers- This unit willexpand students' knowledge of Caribbean life and explore scientifi concepts related to the ocean.  Based on the books The Cay and Timothy of the Cay by Theodore Taylor. 
Coral Reefs- Lessons on coral reefs, longitude and latitude, and regional geography. Making Waves- Curriculum revolving around the oceans.
 
Maritime Culture- An overview of Maritime Culture from ancient times to present. Port Cities- This curriculum not only deals with the ocean but also environment, geography, culture and history.
 
Sailing into the 19th Century- These lessons on late 18th century are based on the book Carry On Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham. The Slave Trade - Lessons about the beginning of slavery and how slavery became part of United States History.
 
S.O.S. Survival on the Sea- Curriculum with emphasis on the book The Voyage of the Frog by Gary Paulsen. Survival: on a ship, in the water,
and on land-
Learn important
information about survival while
reading, writing, working in groups,
and watching a movie.
 
The Caribbean- An active and exploratory approach to the region of the Caribbean. The Cay WebQuest - By Theodore Taylor. Learn how to read ocean and wind currents to locate Philip and Timothy's lost raft in the Caribbean.
 
The Titanic- This unit is based on the shipwreck of the Titanic.  Whales- During this unit, you will dive down beneath the surface of the water to see things like "How big The Blue Whale is", and some of the differences between the different species of whales.
 
Life as a Sailor - takes students on a journey through the stars, into the life of a sailor and onto ships long sunk in the endless sea. Ocean Pollution was developed for the fifth and sixth grade levels. This unit includes 15 lessons with hands-on activities to educate students about ocean pollution.
 
Oceanic Volcanoes: In the following curriculum, you will find lesson plans, activities and references on the topics of Oceanic Volcanoes.
 
 
Cruisin' The Ups and Downs of the Sea: Let's take a cruise around the Caribbean, but beware of the dark side of the sea! Find out more about the Caribbean using this curriculum.
 
Ships and Shipping: Lessons on various ships and their uses.  Based on the book Timothy of the Cay by Theodore Taylor.
 
 
Galapagos Islands: The lessons in the unit are appropriate for the middle school level. Explore with students conservatrion issues, ecological systems and El Nino with this unit.
 
Oceans: This 10 day lesson is based around the book THE BLACK PEARL by Scott O'Dell. This lesson examines the culture, environment, government and economy of the region.
