Through this unit we aim to improve communication
skills, expand studentsí knowledge of Caribbean life, utilize
various research tools including the internet, and explore scientific
concepts related to the ocean. To accomplish these goals, we
have centered the unit around the novels The Cay and Timothy of the
Cay by Theodore Taylor. The lessons in the unit are connected
to these novels which, we believe, makes learning more meaningful and
interesting. The students will use the knowledge they
have gained from the novels and the lessons in this unit to construct
and present a travel brochure on a Caribbean island of their
choice. This brochure will act as a comprehensive evaluation of
the knowledge the students have gained throughout this unit.
