Closing Essay

Goals
1.  Students will use creative writing.
2.  Students will use logical thinking and sequencing skills.

Materials
Paulsen, Gary.  The Voyage of the Frog.  Bantam Doubleday Dell, New York, 1989.
Paper
Pens

Time
2 Hour

Procedure
1.  After the students have finished the book, give them about 10 minutes to brainstorm their ideas on what could have
   happened on David's voyage home.
2.  Have students arrange an outline in the order for which they feel that these events could have happened.
3.  Have the students begin their writing process.  Students should be encouraged to be as creative as possible.
4.  Once the students are done, they can type their essay on the computer, revising it as they type.
5.  Students will exchange essays with a partner for peer evaluation of the essay.  Evaluators will focus on grammar and
    spelling corrections.

Assessment
1.  Students final essay will be reviewed by the teacher (Criteria for success: the creativity of the essay, logical structure of
    the events, spelling, and grammar (see rubrics)).

Major Concepts
1.  Language Arts - creative writing. spelling and grammar
2.  Mathematics - Logical thinking, logical sequencing

Extensions
1.  Students can illustrate their essay.
2.  Students can put the essays in the form of a book.
3.  Rather than do an essay, students can use a cartoon strip to end the book.
