The American Meteorological Society promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. Founded in 1919, AMS has a membership of more than 14,000 professionals, students, and weather enthusiasts. The AMS Education Program provides significant professional development opportunities to K–12 teachers through its DataStreme Courses in meteorology, oceanography, and climate science and through in-residence summer workshops: Project ATMOSPHERE and the Maury Project. The program also creates and licenses course packages for undergraduate institutions in meteorology, oceanography, and climate science and provides workshops for faculty at minority serving institutions in these disciplines.

The COSEE Network works with the American Meteorological Society to promote understanding of the importance of the ocean and atmosphere in the face of a changing climate, and to share that knowledge with general public and decision-makers.
