COSEE welcomes the opportunity to work with individuals or organizations to achieve our Network goals and vision. Opportunities are available at the Center or Network level and, depending on the specific circumstances, may generally fall into the following categories:

  • Participating in COSEE activities
  • Collaborating with COSEE by leveraging existing resources for mutual benefit
  • Partnering with COSEE to invest existing or future resources in effective and sustainable initiatives

PARTICIPATING, COLLABORATING & PARTNERING AT THE CENTER LEVEL

Participating in Center Programs & Events. All COSEE Centers offer numerous opportunities for participation at Public Events, Professional Development Workshops, Research Experiences, College Courses, etc.

Centers' websites. Overviews of each Center are available on COSEE.net. Click on "Centers" in the orange navigation bar and then Center titles to access individual websites.

COSEE.net. Opportunities are also advertised on our Events page. We also maintain an archive of past COSEE events.

Center e-Newsletters. Some Centers have e-newsletters that can keep you updated on their latest offerings.

Center blogs and Facebook. Some Centers have blogs that encourage online user participation and feedback. These include NOW, Ocean Learning Communities, and COSEE-West. Interested parties are welcome to join the Facebook group of COSEE-OS.

Serving in an Advisory Capacity. Each Center has an External Advisory Committee, the composition of which depends on the goal of the Center. Individuals interested in serving on an External Advisory Committees should email or call the Contact at their Center of interest.

Collaborating on Existing Long-Term Projects. The uniqueness and individuality of each Center is described on the Centers' overview page. From there you can contact personnel who are knowledgeable about each Center's expertise and capacity. Likewise, these individuals will be able to assess the potential collaboration in terms of factors such as these:

  • Interdependence. How well does the proposed collaboration leverage strengths and assets of each organization?
  • Investment. Are the collaborators willing to invest long term and commit resources?
  • Integration. Does the collaboration address the diverse needs of the intended audience?
  • Institutionalization. Does the collaboration have formal status with clear responsibilities and decision-making processes?
  • Individual Excellence. Do each of the collaborators have something of value to contribute?
  • Importance. Is the collaboration an important contribution to the Network goals and vision?

Partnering on Future Projects. Most COSEE Centers are well-equipped to work on proposals and welcome individuals or organizations to discuss ideas for high-quality partnerships. Center-approved partnering proposals will include a letter of support from the Director(s) of each Center involved. These letters should include a statement of mutual goals, specific details of the expected exchanges between partners/collaborators, metrics for success, and how the relationship will be documented (e.g., please contact the National Network Director if you are interested in viewing one example of a COSEE Collaborative Agreement). While the list of potential opportunities are too numerous to list, here are two important categories of partnerships in the COSEE Network:

Contact information for individual Centers can be accessed by clicking here. For more general information about Centers, feel free to contact the National Network Director or COSEE Council Chair.

ALLCOSEE listserv. This moderated listserv is used to share items of interest among members of the COSEE Network. If you are interested in joining, please contact Catherine Cramer with the following information: your name, institution, and connection to COSEE or ocean sciences research and/or education.

Annual Network Meeting. Annual Network Meetings are nominally held during the first week of May and are hosted by various Centers on a rotating basis. The 2009 annual meeting will be hosted by COSEE SE. Contact the CCO for more details.

Serving in an Advisory Capacity. The COSEE Network has an National Advisory Committee (NAC), that includes a balance of perspectives and varied expertise including, but not limited to: Research scientists, Officers of scientific societies and professional organizations, Formal and informal science educators, States’ Departments of Education staff, Professional program evaluators, Ocean-related Foundation staff, and Ocean-related Industry/Business/Technology leaders. The NAC meets twice per year: during the annual Network Meeting (first week of May) and once in conjunction with a COSEE Council meeting (first week of November). If you are interested in applying to join the NAC, please contact the National Network Director or the Central Coordinating Office liaison to the NAC.

Collaborating on Existing Projects. The COSEE Network welcomes opportunities to collaborate with individuals or organizations. One-page requests for Network Collaboration should be sent to the National Network Director or COSEE Council Chair. These requests will typically be vetted during monthly telecons of the COSEE Council. Urgent matters may need to be addressed by the Executive Committee. The one-page request for COSEE Network Collaboration should address the following factors:

  • Relevance. Does the collaboration align with Network goals and vision?
  • Recognition. Does the collaboration have high visibility?
  • Reach. Is the collaboration broadly regional to national in scale?
  • Resources. What resources are needed, including time and effort?
  • Return on Investment. If applicable, does the collaboration have good potential to be externally funded in the future?

Partnering on Future Projects. The COSEE Network welcomes individuals or organizations to share ideas for high-quality partnerships that are broadly regional to national in scope. All Network-level partnerships must be vetted by the COSEE Council and thus should have enough lead time to be discussed at the monthly "Council Check-in Calls" that nominally occur on the second Tuesday of each month1. To discuss specific Network Partnership ideas, please contact the National Network Director or COSEE Council Chair. Council-approved partnership proposals will include a letter of support from the Executive Committee on behalf of the COSEE Council. These letters should include a statement of mutual goals, specific details of the expected exchanges between partners/collaborators, metrics for success, and how the relationship will be documented (e.g., Collaborative Agreement, Memorandum of Understanding, etc.).

COSEE Funded Programs. The NSF COSEE Program has information on funding solicitations and a list of recent awards.

Please contact Liesl Hotaling, National Partnerships and Collaborations Coordinator, for more information.

1Time-sensitive or other urgent matters may need to be addressed by the COSEE Council Executive Committee.
