December 14 - 18, 2009

COSEE booth
Exhibition Hall Booth Location: Moscone Convention Center (San Francisco)
Dates: Tuesday, December 15 – Friday, December 18

The booth was staffed by Central Coordinating Office staff. Staff greeted passersby and engaged them in conversation to better understand their existing knowledge of COSEE.

The following print materials were available in the COSEE Booth:

  • COSEE Center one page profiles
  • New COSEE brochure
  • COSEE programs at AGU flyer
  • Climate Literacy brochures
  • The booklet "EPO Guide for Scientists"
  • Materials from individual COSEE Centers
  • COSEE Ocean Systems' TOS publication "Teaching Physical Concepts in Oceanography: An Inquiry Based Approach"
  • "Sound in the Sea" CD and brochure

COSEE branded give-aways included:

  • 100 Pens
  • 100 Post-its
  • 50 Magnetic clips

The AGU registered more than 15,800 attendees for the Fall Meeting. An attempt was made to track the number of people who stopped by the booth and the number of people engaged in conversations about the COSEE Network. Although all people interfaced with were not recorded, we did speak with over 440 people. The tracking also will serve as a baseline to better staff the booth for future conventions to handle heavy volume times.

The COSEE Network offered a variety of activities for meeting attendees including:

Improved Broader Impacts = Enhanced Scientific Impacts (oral session)
Conveying scientific research to the public is increasing in importance to scientists and society. Scientists are required to include broader impact activities to obtain or leverage funding, strengthen status within peer groups, and enhance graduate student professional development. In addition, scientists are often intrinsically motivated to share their research with the world. Over 40 attendees.

Improved Broader Impacts = Enhanced Scientific Impacts (poster session)
Location: Exhibition and Poster Hall, Moscone South
Date: Wednesday, December 16, 2009
Time: 8am – 12:20pm

Improved Broader Impacts = Enhanced Scientific Impacts (oral session)
Location: 3020 Moscone West
Date: Thursday, December 17, 2009
Time: 11:20am – 12:20pm

COSEE Young Investigators Luncheon
Location: Sierra I, San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotel
Date: Wednesday, December 16, 2009
Time: 12:30 pm – 1:30pm

The purpose of the luncheon was to reach young investigators (students finishing their Ph.D.s, post docs, and those in academic positions for less than 5 years) and provide guidance on crafting sound and robust broader impact plans for their federal agency proposals. None of the participants had heard of COSEE prior to the meeting and stopping by the COSEE Exhibit Hall booth. The participants were provided with an overview of broader impact statements and were given an opportunity to network and discuss activities in which they have either been a part the past or might be interested in implementing in the future. Attendees were also provided with information about the National COSEE Network and how the Network might be of assistance with future proposals.

The National COSEE Network was featured by Julie Stuart of Making Ideas Visible. M. Stuart was contracted by AGU to create daily murals reflective of the Meeting Highlights. The completed white boards were in the main conference building alongside and visible from the escalators.

Future Plans for COSEE at AGU
The National COSEE Network plans to maintain a presence at the AGU Fall Meeting for at least three more years. For the 2010 Fall Meeting, we will plan to submit a similar format for the conference, including an exhibition hall booth, proposals for oral and poster sessions, and host a COSEE sponsored luncheon for young investigators.
