COSEE Island Earth hosted a media training workshop as part of the pilot journalist at sea program. Twenty participants attended the Communication in Ocean Sciences Workshop, facilitated by COSEE Island Earth and Polynesian Voyaging Society on Saturday, July 28, 2012. Former science writer for the Honolulu Advertiser and keynote speaker Jan Tenbruggencate talked about his experiences and knowledge gained from many years of educating and informing the public on scientific issues. This workshop was put on for Polynesian Voyaging Society educators, students, volunteers, and others who will be participants in the upcoming worldwide sail in 2013. The objective of the workshop was to get the participants familiar with the different means of media and gain some skill and comfort level in sharing their stories. Workshop presentations included how to deal with social media, print sources, television and radio interviews, blogging, and podcasts. Participants had the opportunity to test their new skills, giving trial presentations and receiving feedback for improvement.
