The COSEE Excellence in Networking Tools Sub-Group (ENTs) is reviewing all of the online networking tools that COSEE Centers have tried. This is a place to showcase the tools that have worked - and why!
COSEE-Alaska, MailChimp and Ning
How do you communicate among hundreds of ocean scientists and educators spread across the largest and most-wired state in the country? How do you add in the many scientists who do their research in Alaska’s seas but have home institutions in many other states? COSEE-Alaska identified the development and support of SeaNET, the Network of Scientists and Educators in Alaska, as one the highest priorities of their project, and used MailChimp and Ning to help build it. | Working Group Updates |
|
ENTS Sub-Group The Excellence in Networking Tools Sub-Group (ENTs) is developing an online networking tools guidebook. Working in wiki format, we are collaboratively designing and building the guidebook, which aims to provide Centers with up-to-date descriptions, reviews and best practices in order to make choosing the appropriate networking tool easier and more productive. We expect the guidebook to be ready to disseminate to the Network within the next few weeks. For more information contact ENTS co-chairs Carla Companion and Catherine Cramer.
Web Working Group During our last telecon of 2009, the WWG reviewed recent updates to the September release of the Content Management System (CMS), which included highlighting primary Center affiliations in the Directory and adding a menu across the top of the Directory page to enable filtering of people by last name. Next up: implementing functionality to allow those Centers not on the CMS to 1) share news, events, and resources stored on the COSEE server and 2) control an "About Us" page on COSEE.net. Scientist Engagement Working GroupThe Scientist Engagement Working Group (SEW-G) met for the first time in November and began its work to produce robust, multimedia content for COSEE.net focusing on the education and outreach efforts of participating scientists. Each Center is represented on SEW-G, which is sponsored by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and a National Science Foundation Grant to COSEE-Central Gulf of Mexico. SEW-G members are in the process of identifying scientists who will best represent the efforts of each Center through exemplary education and outreach efforts. The case study Production Team has assembled a selection of websites that illustrate features that are desirable in the finished product. The Production Team will begin work later in January on the first case study, which will feature Bob Chen of UMass Boston, representing COSEE-New England. COSEE at AGU The COSEE Network was well-represented at the AGU Meeting in December through an exhibit booth, oral and poster sessions on Improved Broader Impacts = Enhanced Scientific Impacts, a Young Investigators Lunch, and a mural. [more]
2010 Alaska Marine Science Symposium January 18-22, 2010, Anchorage, Alaska. COSEE-Alaska will present a Communicating Ocean Science workshop on January 18. [more]
COSEE at Ocean Sciences The COSEE Network will have an impressive showing during the upcoming Ocean Sciences Meeting in Portland, Oregon in February. COSEE activities include oral and poster sessions on evaluation, broader impact development, improving ocean literacy, and aquatic observing systems education and outreach. COSEE Ocean Learning Communities just gave a free workshop on Addressing Broader Impact Requirements for Research Proposals.
COSEE-Great Lakes has posted its Program Highlights from 2009.
COSEE-Networked Ocean World Visit the COSEE-NOW portal for articles on coral bleaching and buoyancy, and listen to the latest Ocean Gazing podcast.
COSEE-Ocean Systems In February COSEE-OS will hold its first-ever workshop to investigate climate, ocean, and biosphere connections by teaming graduate students with prominent researchers. Details here.
COSEE-OS recently partnered with the Seacoast Science Center (SSC) in Rye, New Hampshire to develop content for a staff workshop focusing on the complex topic of ocean aerosols. Thanks to grant funding, University of New Hampshire scientist Dr. Hui Feng has been working with the SSC to translate his research on ocean aerosols and modeling into programs for the public at approximately a third grade level. NSF Geo-Ed Program Solicitation Available The National Science Foundation has recently released the updated and revised program solicitation for the Geosciences Education (GEO-Ed) Program, NSF 10-512, deadline March 8, 2010. It is available here.
NOSB Student Video Contest Living on the Ocean Planet Last year, the Gulf of Maine Census initiated a pilot contest with the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) designed to get more students involved with ocean science by using a medium they all know and love well - the 2-minute video clip. The pilot project was a success and is now open to all high schools. Visit NOSB for more information.
NOAA Ocean Today Kiosk Video Submissions Would you like more visibility for your ocean project? Consider submitting a proposal on your ocean story, video or images for Ocean Today Kiosk. The Ocean Today Kiosks are maintained by NOAA in association with The Smithsonian Institution and are located at the National Museum of Natural History as well at 13 other aquaria and science centers around the world. Story proposals are accepted twice a year - the next deadline is January 30, 2010.

IPMEN Conference The 2010 International Pacific Marine Educators Network (IPMEN) Conference will be held July 7-10 in Fiji, with the theme of Marine Education in the New Millennium. Marine educators worldwide will again gather to share resources and to advance a network aimed at ensuring the health of the Pacific and the communities who depend upon it. If funds are available, web conferencing will allow virtual participation for educators and others who are unable to travel to Fiji. Details can be found on the conference site. |

Ocean Acidification The December 2009 issue of Oceanography magazine is a special issue on ocean acidification. The open-access articles are posted online.
World Ocean Database NOAA has released the World Ocean Database 2009, the largest, most comprehensive collection of scientific information about the oceans, with records dating as far back as 1800. The database provides approximately 9.1 million temperature profiles and 3.5 million salinity reports. The 2009 database also captures 29 categories of scientific information, including oxygen levels and chemical tracers, plus information on gases and isotopes that can be used to trace the movement of ocean currents.
