COSEE West partnered with COSEE Coastal Trends to present an Ocean Observing Systems (OOS) based curricula and hands-on activities workshop to enable K-12 teachers and informal educators to use real-time or near real-time OOS data. For the past two years, COSEE West has hosted a week long OOS summer workshop for teachers and informal educators in which several scientists presented ocean science content related to their work which uses or contributes to OOS online data.

The COSEE West OOS summer workshop partnered with local informal science centers and research institutions to host the workshop in order to introduce the resources of these facilities to teachers and educators. Workshop content included Ocean Literacy principles and relating curricula and hands-on activities to California science content standards. Teachers and educators participating in the OOS workshops were required to implement at least one lesson plan or in-service workshop during the following school year. Local Southern California teachers as well as a few teachers from other regions of the country participated in the OOS workshops. Evaluation data indicates that scientists, teachers, and educators all benefited from their participation in the workshop. The OOS summer workshop model is one that can be successfully transferred to teacher education programs at other research/education institutions.
