Category: For Educators
Resource Type: Link
Date Posted: 07/30/2012

This study evaluated the composition of floating mats in the Indian River Lagoon. They found that the majority of the mats were comprised of Lyngbya, a common cyanobacteria. They also found that the cyanobacteria produces "Lyngbya toxin" which causes a human skin irritation called "seaweed dermitis" which causes a rash and itching for swimmers that come in contact.
