Building Bridges: Collaboration for Broadening Participation in Ocean Sciences: NC OPT-ED & COSEE SouthEast are working together to increase exposure to ocean sciences to underrepresented minority students in North Carolina.

A two-day workshop in December of 2010 hosted by North Carolina State University with COSEE SE partnership gathered regional diversity leaders from Universities and state/federal agencies. The workshop, funded by an NSF OEDG (Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in Geosciences) planning grant awarded to Dr. Carrie Thomas of the Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences Department at North Carolina State University, directly resulted in collaborating between NC OPT-ED and COSEE SouthEast. Through this collaboration, underrepresented minority students in North Carolina are gaining exposure to ocean sciences.

Presented by Larry Campbell and Carrie Thomas at the 2012 Ocean Sciences Meeting, Salt Lake City, UT
