Scientists at the Smithsonian Institution have isolated a chemical compound from bacteria to induce coral larvae to successfully settle. Experiments concluded that the nutrient-rich seawater increases the concentration of the bacteria but does not influence the concentration of the active compound. An example of using observation and inferences to better understand the environment.
