Web Working Group The WWG and RWS have completed the functionality to post slideshows to COSEE.net (see our first show here). This functionality will be made available to the Center websites after testing on COSEE.net is completed. For more information, contact Annette deCharon, WWG Chair.

ENT Sub-Group ENTS members continue to update the Online Tools Guidebook and are developing ideas for Tools That Work and the ENTS blog. For more information, contact one of the ENTS co-chairs Catherine Cramer and Carla Companion.
 COSEE at Conferences
2012 National Science Teachers Association National Conference, Indianapolis, IN, March 29 – April 1, 2012 COSEE had a strong presence at the recent NSTA meeting. Read the report here.

USA Science and Engineering Festival Walter E. Washington Convention Center Washington, D.C. April 27 - 29, 2012 COSEE collaborated with the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Education Department staff to offer a hands-on oceanography themed booth. The booth was staffed by National COSEE Office staff and AGU Education staff. AGU donated graphic artist time and effort to create a custom graphic for the event, which also served as an organizing graphic for the activities offered in the booth. Eleven activities were offered to festival attendees. The various activities, posted to the COSEE.net site, were intended to serve as hands-on examples representing various sub-disciplines within oceanography. Read the full report here. Watch a video of COSEE staff at the Festival here.

COSEE Island Earth participated in the 2012 Ocean Expo on April 21-22, 2012. Hawaii Ocean Expo is an annual expo where everyone who is “ocean-minded” can come together to share knowledge and experience of Hawaii’s ocean-centric culture. We received over 1000 visitors to our booth who got to participate in hands-on ocean science activities and learn about some of the marine science research and career opportunities at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, University of Hawaii. Included in the booth was an ocean listening activity, a climate change and ocean acidification demonstration, a marine science quiz game, and prizes. Thanks to over 15 students, staff, and volunteers, we successfully handed out information about our new COSEE Island Earth program to the public, and completed a survey on ocean users and ocean topics of interest.

 Workshop
COSEE-Ocean Systems On April 24th - 26th, COSEE-OS in collaboration with the Northeastern University (NU) Marine Science Center (MSC) hosted a Faculty Graduate Student Collaborative Workshop at the MSC in Nahant, MA. Working in small groups, three NU faculty (Professors Matt Bracken, Jon Grabowski and Rebeca Rosengaus) collaborated with nine marine science graduate students to learn new skills for communicating to general audiences the “big picture” messages found in their diverse research topics. Read more here.

COSEE TEK An environmental science teacher and her students at Waterford High School in Waterford, CT are currently participating in a COSEE-TEK citizen science project to monitor waterborne pesticides and marine invertebrate communities in the Niantic Bay area, Long Island Sound, and throughout the U.S. More information here.

COSEE-West is offering the Ocean Observing Systems: Summer Teacher Institute, a free 5-day workshop for middle and high school teachers, July 30-August 3. More information here.

Draft Science Standards The DRAFT Next Generation K-12 Science Standards were released for public comment on May 11 and can be read here. Public comment is encouraged. A second opportunity to review a revised version will be offered in the fall of 2012. It is anticipated that the standards will be finalized in 2013. The Next Generation Science Standards are based on the National Research Council (NRC) Framework for K–12 Science Education, which describes the major practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas that all students should be familiar with by the end of high school, and provides an outline of how these practices, concepts, and ideas should be developed across the grade levels.

Report: Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean The long term consequences of ocean acidification are not known, but are expected to result in changes to many ecosystems and the services they provide to society. Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean reviews the current state of knowledge, explores gaps in understanding, and identifies several key findings. Read the report.

Call for Papers: Ocean Literacy in the Classroom The journal Science Activities: Classroom Projects and Curriculum Ideas, published by Routledge/Taylor and Francis Group, will host a special issue entitled Ocean Literacy in the Classroom, January 2013, Vol. 50, Issue 1.
