Communicating Ocean Science for Knauss Fellows

SCIENCE COMMUNICATION & LEARNING: Research-based Theory and Tools, A Workshop for 2011 Sea Grant Knauss Fellows from the NSF Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence

When: This 2.5 day workshop will be held:

  • Monday Feb 14, 2011: 8am – 5pm
  • Tuesday Feb 15, 2011: 8am – 5pm
  • Wednesday Feb 16, 2011: 8am – 2pm

Where: NOAA Silver Spring Campus – 1315 East-West Highway, Silver Spring, MD

Who: Designed specifically for 2011 SEA GRANT Knauss Fellows

What: Learn how to present complex ideas to a variety of audiences. This workshop focuses on the role of communication in bridging science, society, and politics.

Program: Participants will learn best practices in science communication, effective tools to facilitate discussions, and theories of learning that help you share knowledge with government agencies, lobbyists, and the general public. The program includes hands-on activities and will address issues such as:

  • Understanding how people build understanding of science concepts
  • Communicating the nature and process of science to the general public, journalists, and other professionals
  • Creating and presenting your best elevator talk
  • "Getting to yes” in presenting new and/or controversial ideas
  • Bridging the gap between science and policy

This engaging and interactive workshop will be led by scientists and educators from COSEE:
