Ocean Observing Systems
Date: 08/11/08 - 08/15/08
Location: Various locations in the greater Los Angeles area
Attendance: Middle and high school teachers who wish to incorporate near real-time data into their classroom instruction

In this Institute, participants will learn about cutting edge instruments deployed to collect data from the ocean environment and about the data that these instruments generate. Working in teams, participants will use near real-time data from OOS instruments such as moorings and buoys, incorporating Principles of Ocean Literacy, to develop lesson plans that they can integrate into their classroom instruction and share with other teachers. Scientists will present talks about their research using ocean observing systems (OOS). Related demonstrations and hands-on activities will present different ways to use data produced by OOS sensors and samplers to enhance classroom lessons and build students’ understanding of ocean systems and the importance of the ocean in their daily lives. A field trip to the Ocean Institute will highlight Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and other shipboard sampling techniques. A field trip to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory will focus on satellite observations.

This institute is presented by COSEE-West.
