2008 MARE Summer Leadership Institute
Date: 07/31/08 - 08/08/08
Location: University of California at Santa Cruz
Attendance: Teachers, school administrators and informal educators

Join us for this exciting opportunity to participate in classroom and field experiences in a variety of marine habitats. Tidepooling at sunrise, exploring a salt marsh, and boating across the Monterey Bay Submarine Canyon in search of marine mammals are just some the experiences included in the Institute.

Daily instruction includes a fascinating array of ocean science content, hands-on activities from the Marine Resources, Actitivites & Education (MARE) curriculum and leadership activities delivered by a talented group of educators, scientists, and storytellers. Instruction includes: inquiry-based science; leading effective field experiences for students; the MARE On-Line Support System; building comprehension and science content through reading; addressing the needs of English learners; and incorporating storytelling and art into your science program. Participants receive the MARE curriculum, an inquiry-driven grade-level specific, standards-based teacher’s guide appropriate for all students, in addition to other high quality supplemental materials.

Participants are prepared to become leaders as they guide the implementation of the MARE program at their school or district. In this capacity, they gain skills to help their school or district improve its overall science curriculum and instruction. K-6 teachers or those working with K-6 teachers are encouraged to apply; 7th-8th grade teachers are welcome to attend (curriculum easily adaptable).
