Nationwide Video Contest for Ocean Scientists

COSEE Florida is pleased to announce a nationwide video contest for ocean scientists. Starting October 15, 2013, the Ocean 180 Video Challenge will be accepting video abstracts detailing recent peer-reviewed ocean science publications. Ocean scientists, including undergraduate and graduate students, affiliated with US-based institutions are eligible to participate.
We encourage you, your students, and colleagues to submit a 180 second video abstract. Submissions should summarize the important findings of a recent research paper and highlight the relevance, meaning, and implications of the research to persons outside the discipline. This is an excellent opportunity to broaden your impact and share your research in a format accessible to students, teachers and the general public.
Videos will be initially judged by a panel of scientists and communication experts, with the final winners selected by a diverse group of potential-future ocean scientists – 6th-8th graders from all over the globe. The top three video abstracts will receive cash prizes of $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place and $1,000 for third place.
How Does it Work?
Authors of a peer-reviewed ocean science publication (either online or in print) with a publication date between January 1, 2008 and December 1, 2013 submit a 3 minute video of the research described in the paper by the competition deadline. The top 10 video abstracts will be viewed by sixth through eighth grade students in registered middle school classrooms all over the world who will select the top three videos.
How to Enter
All video abstracts are due by December 1, 2013 (11:59pm PST). All entries should be submitted online at www.ocean180.org.
