Scientists are challenged by funding agencies, decision makers, and educators to provide outreach to various audiences about what they do, their findings, and the broader impact of their research beyond the scientific community. COSEE SE is coordinating an intense 2-day learning forum that will help scientists hone communication skills and provide techniques for working with the media, formal educators and informal science centers. Strategies for development and delivery of effective outreach programs will be presented and practiced.
Participant Expectations and Outcomes
- Develop communities of practice that include scientists, educators and communication professionals to broadly disseminate scientific research.
- Participate in evaluation activities designed to gauge the impact of REEF.
Scientists also will plan and deliver an outreach program at a local informal science center on either your research or a related ocean science concept.
Science coaches and coordinators also will assist scientists with the development of an educational program for presentation at a local informal science center to ensure the material is age-appropriate and tied to educational standards if the program is for children or formal educators.
Informal science educator also will assist scientists with development and presentation of an educational program at your informal education facility.
Funding: Participants will receive a stipend of $200 for completing the workshop and an additional $100 for conducting a subsequent outreach activity at an informal institution and participating in evaluation activities.
