The Coastal Observing Center and the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing Center (GoMOOS) have co-sponsored teacher workshops at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) since 2004. At these Educator Institutes, participants learn new content, gain lab and sea research experience as well as identify new classroom activities to translate ocean science to learners. Through computers and web available data, teachers also learn how the Gulf of Maine works, how it changes, and how we can monitor those changes.

This workshop will be held in collaboration with George Matsumoto of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California. Dr. Matsumoto is a research scientist and the Education Director of their program. He runs a program called EARTH (Education and Research: Testing Hypotheses) which is a professional development program using real time ocean observing data for teachers in the classroom.

This workshop will also focus on specific aspects that directly connect to the COSEE-OS program, of which UNH is a partner.
