Background with Respect to Ocean Sciences Education:
Dr. Capers obtained her PhD in Biology with emphasis in marine mammal immunology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Her work has involved research at the Marine Life Oceanarium in Gulfport, MS (prior to Hurricane Katrina), participation in NOAA Shark Longline Survey cruises, and research and educational activities at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Currently, she is an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Studies at Indian River State College and will be instrumental in developing educational curriculum for pre-service science teachers to incorporate ocean science into their lesson plans.
